Sarah Said We Were in Love

Sarah said we were in love. She cooed when we passed by her. What a pair! What a duo! We looked at each other like we were supposed to. You held my hand then I chased you down the aisles of the grocery store. Oh, what a pair, she said. We took that trip out to the farm together. It was September so the winds kept your coat tight. The farmer’s wife said we were as cute as could be. Sarah nodded with hands around her cup, steam in her face. The farmer stood in the doorway. His hands were rougher than mine. Did you see the fox? He was there by the bales, Sarah said. We rode back with red lips in silence. Content, you said.

She would always be the first one to toast at our dinner parties. I leaned in so I could hear you. Just a gentle tease, it was a good toast, we told Sarah. I never told you but it hurt her. She pulled me aside after while you picked up plates. How could you do this to me?
