at noon or earlier than seven
but he said this to me
with a joint in his teeth
at two in the morning

maybe he was disappointed in me
and my smoking habits

I asked him on occasion
to pick me up cigarettes
on his way back from work
while I sat on the porch
with a glass of scotch
and my last smoke burning
