I hear god
crying like a wildcat
in the early morning hours
and I go out and feed him
little pieces of my skin
like a dog catching a bird
and bringing it to its master

but it never seems to sate
either of us so forget
the point and follow
the trials of sweat and error
until we forget that we’ve done
all of this before

I hear god’s bones chattering
in the cold
in the heat
so I give him old jackets
that remind me of photographs
and small hands and small
loves that I was given
when I was younger
