fleet of foot

does she cook in the morning
large breakfasts and a thick accent
greet me

she keeps up with me
says I need more exercise
and to eat more
and stop smoking,
only if I want -
she smokes more than I do
“better genes”
she says

she goes for weeks at a time
with no explanation
sometimes I get a note
other times she calls and says
“I’m back in town, be there soon”
I’m drunk and scratching myself
I clean up and look presentable
