I left my head in the canyon
southeast
Colorado
northeast
west
left my head in the canyon

it’s living its life alone
without the fear of
success or
solitude

spends its days
marveling at the night sky
the gentle back and
forth of the talking rivers
wondering
well
I

wondering if it will see
a fox in the underbrush
or if it will find itself
set free

but me
I wonder if you wonder about me

I wonder if you step
onto the grass at midnight
feel it beneath your feet
and think about me
doing the same

I’ve long since forgotten
life before you
and whatever forests
valleys and canyons
were left for me

I left my head in the canyon
southeast
Colorado
northeast
west
left my head in the canyon

and sometimes
when I hear the crickets
and gentle hum that
comes with an empty night
I can’t keep myself from crying
