here’s to you and our handshake
and my toothy grin
and the cat we thought about
adopting at that one shelter
we never visited

and here’s to all the toasts
I make in my head and write down
at two in the morning but then
erase
because I think I’ve done one
like this before

but
I’ve rented out my head to a team
of toddlers playing hopscotch
so I’m not quite sure anymore
what’s going on
I guess they’ve ceded some
real estate to emails
cause
I keep checking and composing
drafts to her and then
thinking
thinking
and the toddlers have started
playing dodgeball
so I sit back and stare
at the dogs around my feet

I shower
I find more white hairs
and I’ve stopped counting
and look
the kids have taken out
their jump ropes
