you should know
I’ve been leaning
against the dresser
for the better part of an hour
juggling three different
books of poetry
trying to distill
some essence or
some oil to drill
trying to think of my own poem
a poem to you
regardless of if your eyes ever
lazily glance upon this
regardless of your opinion of my
use of the word “lazily”
but I think the adverb can stay
you should also know my eyes
are large saucers
purple lined saucers
with some hints of blue
or maybe
and I think this is true
you already know that
and maybe you also know
I’m writing this savoring
what I hope are the last cigarettes
I’ll ever smoke
or maybe
you know this stanza is for me
as much as it is for you
well
and this is the last thing
you should know it’s not so much
a poem as a statement of facts
with some lines shorter
than the others
I want to live
in a little house with you
there
that’s it
I want to live
in a little house with you
and
I like being beside you
there
now that’s it
there
well also
I want to live
in a little house with you
and
I like being beside you
and
I always want to try
sometimes things get so hard
and the distance has been so long
and the sadness has been so heavy
sometimes all the other shit
gets in the way of the right thing
and that’s you
and me
there
I’ve been reading Billy Collins
That’s it
